Concerts on the Common begin.

The first summer concert in a series run by the city is a performance by folk singers Peter, Paul, and Mary. Although the concerts are very popular, escalating costs, concerns about damage to Boston Common, and competition from private concert promoters lead to the series being discontinued in 1989.
